Blood Cancer

It is not more than a couple of decades that human life started fighting and being victimized by the cancer more frequently and many of us find our beloved ones getting defeated by the monstrous disease. If I say that the very word cancer brings fear of unseen along with, it may prove true as you will find cancer patients around; most of whom do nothing but simply to wait for the predator of their death that may knock at the moment or the other and grab their life away. On the other hand you must have heard about those who have been fighting against their disease for the last several years with a brave heart without being going in self pity; the only difference between the two mentioned cases is of the strength of will power.
Cancer patients can live a normal and successful life like other people if they incur a strong desire to slap the disease back. Anyhow we may say a lot about to defeat the disease, but the unchangeable fact is that it is really a matter of great pain and misery when you find your beloved ones slipping their lives away for cancer. The only thing that we can do is to educate ourselves about the symptoms of the disease so that the treatment may not get delayed and on the other hand to have a distance of arm’s length from all those causes and events which evidently can become a source of cancer.
Medical science has subdivided cancer in many types and categories which is quite impossible to capsulate in a single article so here I’ll touch only blood cancer.
Blood cancer is a generalized term which is subdivided in three types; leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myelomas.
Symptoms of Blood Cancer:
Very common symptoms of blood cancer are below, appearing of any of which can be indicative that blood cancer germs are getting place in your body. These symptoms are listed below:
  • Very frequent vomiting (apart from any digestive reason)
  • Fatigue, breathlessness and weakness
  • Bone fractures even with minute bone strain
  • Easy bruising
  • Fever
  • Sweating at night
  • Lumps or abdominal distension due to enlarged abdominal organs
  • Abdominal pain, Bone pain and Back pain
  • Delirium and confusion
  • Abnormal bleeding in gums nose and cuts, which will result in platelet reduction
  • Headaches with occurrence of visual difficulties
  • Occurrence of fine rashes on dark spots
  • Decreased urination and difficulty while urinating
Diagnosis of Leukemia:
The diagnose of all three types of blood cancer involves a blood test and a test of bone marrow; the result of which reveals the intensity, type and the internal condition of blood cells. When it comes to the treatment of leukemia, it depends upon three facts: what is the medical history of the patient? What is the age group of the individual suffering with the disease? And in which health condition the patient is present?
What is the treatment of Leukemia?
Many patients of leukemia are treated with chemotherapy while some are also diagnosed with radioactive therapy while in few cases bone marrow transplantation is made. The last is in the severe condition where none of other two works.
Prevention:
Hitherto, there is no prevention is known for leukemia.
Risk Factors:
There is no wonder if your doctor is unable to tell you why one gets blood cancer and the other doesn’t. Medical Science has failed in determining the exact reason of cancer. This is thrown in the coat of nature that nature takes the decision however; by the research there are few discovered risk factors the happening or addiction of which increases the chances for a person to get cancer.
  1. 1. Radiation:
Radiation is found to be the major factor among these risk factors. It is revealed that people having frequent and greater exposure to the radiation are found to be more vulnerable for being a prey of the disease.
  1. 2. Atomic Bomb Exposure:
It has been a sub heading of the above mentioned cause. Atomic bomb is the biggest source of radiation. Very severe and dangerous radiation are found even decades after where an atomic bomb is exploded like in Japan World War II, many people who survived after are found to be at higher risk of becoming patient of leukemia.
  1. 3. Radiation Therapy:
People who have to go through radiation therapies like CT scan and other higher levels of exposing radiations are at greater risk of having leukemia while those who undergo X-rays or other scans are exposed to very low level of radiation exposure. It’s not known whether these X-rays can be a risk factor or not.
  1. 4. Smoking & Benzene:
Higher exposure to benzene can lead to acute leukemia. Benzene is extensively used in the chemical industry and millions of individuals make its usage daily. This is widely used in cigarette, gas and gasoline.
  1. 5. Down Syndrome and other Diseases:
People having Down syndrome or other inherited blood disorder are considered to be at higher risk from getting a prey of the disease.
Having exposure to one or more risk factors does not mean that this will surely bring leukemia. Many people are there who are at frequent exposure with these risk factors but do not get leukemia.

Leukemia: A Blood Cancer

By Kimberly Ann Omandam

Leukemia, as being defined, is a bone marrow disorder which occurs when there is an abnormal increase of white blood cells, one of the blood cell types which main function is to fight against invading bacteria and viruses. When this blood cell abnormality arises, it can bring two harmful effects to the body.

This leads to improper maturity of the white blood cells (WBC) as they develop. As a result, it deteriorates body's immune system as it weakens the ability of WBC to fight against infections.
This may pack the bone marrow resulting to no room for platelets and red blood cells which also have essential functions to the body.

Two Types of Leukemia

Acute Leukemia

This needs immediate treatment as this rapidly increases the progress of the malignant cells. This the common form usually experience by children who have leukemia.

Chronic Leukemia

This does not always require immediate treatment as it develops the cancer cells gradually. However, regular checkup is advised to control the symptoms of the disease. This form is commonly experience by the older ones and is seldom cured.

Signs and Symptoms of Leukemia

Leukemia has imprecise symptoms but patients may experience some of these symptoms.

Headaches
Unexplained loss of weight
Bleeding from nose and gums
Bone pain with unknown causes
Skin rash
Fever, night sweats, chills and other flu-like
Easy bruising
Blood in urine
Fatigue
Stomach fullness
Frequent viral or bacterial infections

What causes leukemia?

According to studies, there are several factors which cause leukemia.

Chemicals

Carcinogens are chemicals present in food which can trigger the cancer cells.

Viruses

Leukemia is believed to have been caused by some viral infections.

Genetics

Leukemia is a hereditary ailment which tends to occur in some families.

How to treat Leukemia?

There are several treatment options on leukemia. These include:

Chemotherapy
Surgery
Bone marrow transplant
Biological therapy
Radiation therapy
Innovative treatments

LEUKEMIA (BLOOD CANCER)

By: Riffit Saira (Bio Professor)
We know that cancer mean the irregular division of cells. Leukemia (Blood Cancer) happen when a large amount of abnormal & immuture withe blood cells produces in bone marrow, these are greater then that the production of red blood cells.
The reason of this to become the cancerous mutation in bone marrow cells or in lumph tissues, as a result the production of withe blood cells becomes out of control. These mutations cells of bone marrow may spread in all over the body/organ & then these white cells start to produce from one organ to next (irregularly).
A person in this disease must have to change his/her blood regularly.
TREATMENT.
Treatment of this disease is possible by the transplanting of bone marrow in suffocated / ill person, but it a costly method of treatment.
